Smart Discount
Create storewide, condition-based discount rules that apply automatically when a customer's cart matches criteria you set.
What Smart Discount does
Smart Discount is separate from Funnels and Cart discounts — instead of discounting a specific upsell offer, it creates storewide automatic discount rules that apply whenever a customer's cart matches conditions you define (for example, "10% off anything tagged Furniture"). It's the tool to reach for when you want a promotional rule that isn't tied to a specific upsell widget.
The Discount Rules list
The Smart Discount page lists every rule you've created, with its title, status, rule summary, start date, and optional end date. Use the search bar to find a specific rule, and the row actions to edit or delete one.
Click Create Discount in the top-right to build a new rule.
Creating a discount rule
- Discount Title
- Internal name for the rule, e.g. "Buy Bed get 20% off Mattress".
- Starts At
- Required — when the rule becomes active.
- Ends At
- Optional — leave blank to run indefinitely.
- Combines With
- Order Discounts, Product Discounts, and/or Shipping Discounts — check any Shopify automatic discount types this rule is allowed to stack with.
Under Discount Rules, each rule has a Condition (Trigger) defining what counts as "if cart contains...":
- Match By
- What to match against: Product Tag, Collection, Product Type, Product Title, SKU, or Vendor.
- Operator
- How the match is evaluated, e.g. "in list".
- Value
- Comma-separated values to match against, e.g. "bed, furniture".
Then set the Discount Action:
- Discount Type
- Percentage (%) or Fixed Amount.
- Percentage Off / Amount
- The discount value applied when the condition matches.
- Discount Message (shown to customer)
- The message customers see when the discount applies, e.g. "Buy a Bed, get 20% off Mattress!"
Click Add Another Rule to combine multiple conditions in the same discount, or Create Discount to save and activate it.
